Health & Safety

Practical, easy-to-follow advice to keep you comfortable and confident throughout your Ethiopian adventure.

Ethiopia is a wonderfully safe and welcoming destination. A little preparation goes a long way. Here's everything you need to know to travel with total peace of mind.

Health Preparation

Simple steps to take before you travel

Vaccinations

Routine vaccines are key. Typhoid, Tetanus, Polio, and Hepatitis A are recommended, especially if you'll be venturing outside major hotels or into rural areas. Consult your doctor a few weeks before departure.

Water & Food Safety

Stick to sealed bottled water (widely available everywhere) and avoid tap water including for brushing your teeth. In very remote areas, antiseptic wet wipes are handy for hand hygiene before meals or after using public facilities.

Your Travel Health Kit

Pack your personal medications, pain relievers (paracetamol or ibuprofen), insect repellent, high-SPF sunscreen, lip balm, hand sanitizer, and basic first-aid supplies like bandages and antiseptic cream.

Sun & Altitude

Addis Ababa sits at 2,355m. Take it easy your first day, stay well hydrated, and use strong sunscreen - the high-altitude sun is more intense than you might expect. Most visitors acclimatize quickly.

Malaria Awareness

The high-altitude cities (Addis Ababa, Gondar, Lalibela, Axum, and the Simien and Bale mountains) are above the malaria line and carry virtually no risk. If you're heading to lower-altitude areas like the Rift Valley or Omo Valley, your doctor may recommend a short course of anti-malarials.

Travel Insurance

We strongly recommend comprehensive travel insurance covering medical emergencies, trip cancellations, and lost belongings. It's a small cost for complete peace of mind on the road.
